Midway Dam Removal Project

Funders: Funding Pending

Location: Hitchcock Creek, Rockingham, NC (Richmond County)

Problem: The dam, originally known as Lewarae Dam, was constructed in 1883 as part of a series of cotton mill dams on Hitchcock Creek constructed between the mid 1800’s and early 1900’s. The Dam consists of an earthen embankment and a stone masonry section. The mill converted from hydro power to electricity in the 1930s and the dam has not served a functional purpose since that time.
The dam is currently in poor condition with multiple piping failures through the earthen portion of the dam. The risk of complete failure is considered high.

Goals: Safety of the downstream residents. Restored fish passage for American Shad and other species. Improved water quality. Stabilize streambanks and restore floodplain connectivity.
